Beyond The Classroom

For all the emphasis the education system places on conventional, bookish learning, some of the best learning for life takes place outside the classroom. The great Indian social reformer Swami Vivekananda had said, "Education is the manifestation of the perfection already in man." SSA attempts to bring out this perfection by developing facets in our students other than their intelligence quotient.

We achieve this through a healthy offering of co-curricular and extracurricular activities that encourage all-round growth. These include facets such as creative thinking, collaboration and team work, self-confidence, social etiquette, leadership aptitude, emotional intelligence, and social awareness and compassion.

Student Centric

Our approach to teaching is very student-centric. This means that, apart from placing a premium on the all-round development of each student, we guide and counsel students who need help in identifying talent or areas of personality development that our programmes and projects can enhance.

Co-curricular activities are compulsory, according to the CBSE curriculum, and are spread out across the academic year. Extracurricular activities, on the other hand, are optional but we encourage each child to choose at least one – and there is indeed something for everyone.

Clubs & Societies

Literary Club: Litter Alley

Our Literary Club, 'Litter Alley', was founded in 2011 by the English Department. The club aspires to foster a love of English literature, improve spoken English, and develop skills demanded by activities such as elocution, debates and quiz contests. Litter Alley is one of our school's most popular clubs and regularly organises inter-class, inter-school and state-level competitions in the activities it conducts.

Science Club: Cloud

Life just wouldn't be the same without scientific inventions, would it? So, to inculcate a scientific temper in young minds, encourage scientific curiosity and make our students aware of the latest innovations and scientific developments, SSA is proud to present 'Spectrum', our science club.

Open to students of Stds IV to X, Spectrum organises various activities including:

  • National, state and district level science exhibitions, science fairs and quiz competitions.
  • Science exhibitions and poster competitions in the school.

Environment Club : Go Green

There has never been a greater need for our children to learn to love and respect our natural environment. We also believe it is absolutely critical that they learn to respect the delicate balance of nature for the preservation of the planet. Thus, from creating awareness on the importance of cleanliness to the judicious use of resources such as water and electricity, the 'Environer' aims to sensitise students to all aspects of our environment.

Some of the club's activities are:

  • Planting of saplings
  • Making eco-friendly paper bags
  • Drawing competitions on environment-related themes
  • Poster competitions on themes relating to the environment
  • Grades

Educational Tours

SSA places special emphasis on educational tours as part of the school curriculum. The type and nature of these tours vary, depending on the entity that organises it – Department of History, Geography or Sociology or the Environment Club. These tours sensitise students to their surroundings, to village life, nature, culture and traditions while breaking stereotypical notions. They provide a hands-on look and feel of various aspects of our rich culture and ways of life.

Debates

A debate is not a forum for asserting absolute truth; rather, a means of making and evaluating arguments that allows debaters to better understand their own and other people's positions. Keeping this in mind, SSA considers debates as an important co-curricular activity. It helps students come up with ideas regarding burning topics in society and develops rational thinkers and a better nation as a whole.

Language Development

For Stds I to V, SSA conducts activities like crossword puzzles, word puzzles and spelling bees on a regular basis. We also provide students story books to read in class. To acquire sound knowledge of vocabulary, homophones, antonyms and synonyms are stressed. Students also get a sound foundation in parts of speech through dramatics and playful activities.

Extracurricular Activities

SSA vigorously encourages extracurricular activities, which are fun as well as develop a latent talent, hobby or skill in our students. These include:

  • Sports such as football, volleyball, cricket, basketball, table tennis, handball and athletics
  • Music, dance and fine arts
  • Mountaineering and rock climbing
  • Nature walks and sightseeing programmes with an emphasis on wildlife and ecology
  • Rangoli
  • Pot- painting
  • Yoga
